What Is A Virtual World?

In an essay titled “Second Life: Virtual Worlds and the Enterprise,” independent consultant Susan Kish defines three types of online virtual worlds: MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role-playing games), metaverses, and MMOLEs (massively multilearner online learning environments). In Kish’s view, MMORPGs are more focused on gaming and include titles such as EverQuest and World of Warcraft. Metaverses, on the other hand, are more socially driven; the most recognized example of a metaverse is Linden Lab’s Second Life.

Most CEOs don’t relish the thought of rank-and-file employees whiling away their working hours wandering around virtual landscapes. But, the fact is the use of virtual worlds can deliver value to a business.
